IM Enrico Sevillano wins Westwood chess open championship

GMANews.TV really impressing us with its up to date Philippine chess news on the net (hello, ABS-CBN!) . Less than two weeks before the the start of the US Open in St. Louis where he is the defending co-champ, US based IM Enrico Sevillano had just won an open tournament in L.A, the Westwood Spring International Open.

...The Cebuano native defeated FIDE Master Manukyan Garush in the last round to end up with four points based on his four wins and a defeat in the five-round tournament.

Overall, Sevillano finished tied with Garush and John Daniel Bryant but earned the crown based on a better tie break.

Sevillano, a 1986 Asian junior champion, is currently living in Tehachapi, California. He was also part of the Philippine chess team in the 1992 and 1994 Chess Olympiads.

Another Filipino bet, Remigio Pampliega, finished tied for fourth to eight places with 3.0 points. GMANews.TV

Starting May 7 to 17th, Sevillano is set to defend the US Open Chess Championship which he won with three others last year.
