A Grandmaster and two International Masters for the Philippines have been approved at the 1st Quarter Presidential Board 2009 which was held in Istanbul, Turkey from 5 to 8 March 2009. GM Joseph Sanchez officially became the countries 11th grandmasters. Joseph Sanchez earned his 3rd and final Grandmaster norm during the 23rd Cannes Chess Festival in France where he finished in joint third place and with performance rating of 2635. The Philippines also produced two new IMs; Virgilio Vuelban and Kim Steven Yap.
It was indeed a long and grueling journey for the 38 year old Sanchez. Great to see that his effort and patience had finally paid off. Cheers for GM Joseph Sanchez!
