A Philippine chess team lead by GM Darwin Laylo and IM Julio Catalino Sadorra garnered a total of 29.5 points to claim the title in this years Astro Merdeka rapid chess championship. The team finished in a two-way tie with Gold Is Berhad but clinched the title with higher match point score. Roel Abelgas emerged as the Filipinos’ leading scorer with eight wins one draw and one loss for 8.5 points. Singapore based Sadorra finished second with seven wins, one draw and one loss for 7.5 points, while Laylo wound up with six wins, two draws and one loss for seven points. Allan Cantonjos also scored 6.5 points on four wins and five draws. Three other Philippine teams -- Laguna, Letran College-Calamba and defending champion Apocalypse-Manila all end up in respectable spot by finising third to fifth places.
