Wesley So closing into 2650 ELO rating points!

On course to break the 2650 mark before he turns fifteen

Not only the 14 year old Filipino prodigy GM Wesley So is looking to break into the top 100 chess players in the world, he is also eyeing to make history by becoming the highest rated Filipino chess player ever. As of now, So has unofficial Live rating points of 2624 and an ELO 2577 base on the FIDE quarterly rating for July.

“Wesley will be the highest-rated Filipino chess player ever,” said PIchay during the formal launching of the PGMA Cup and Pichay Cup chess tournaments held in the weekly SCOOP session at the Kamayan Restaurant on Padre Faura Ave., Manila.

Pichay said So’s respectable ninth-place finish in the World Junior Chess Championships in Gaziantep, Turkey; the gold-medal winning performance in the World Under-16 Chess Team Olympiad in Mersin, Turkey; and third-place finish in the Dragon Capital-Vietnam Open chess championship were enough to push his ELO rating to as high as 2624.

So’s previous rating was ELO 2577 base don the FIDE quarterly rating for July.
And Pichay expressed confidence that the 14-year-old high school student from Bacoor, Cavite will further improve his ratings during the PGMA Cup, which begins tomorrow (Sunday, Sept. 7) and the Pichay Cup, which starts Sept. 14.

“With his current performance, I expect him (So) to break into the world’s Top 100,” added Pichay, who is putting up as much as US$70,000 to sponsor the PGMA Cup and Pichay Cup. “Wesley will be a very good player by the time he reaches the age of 18 or 19,”
