Still fresh from his successful defense of the 5th IGB Dato Arthur Tan, Li Chao of China is all gear up to defend another prestigious chess championship he holds, the third President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo Cup international chess championship he won last year here in Manila. Li finished in a three-way tie for first place with compatriots GMs Ni Hua and Weiqi Zhou of China with similar scores of seven points but clinched the title by virtue of a higher tiebreak score last year. In May of this year, he came joint first on points (8.0/11) and first on tie-break at the 2nd Philippine International Open in Subic Bay Freeport. As of July 2008 he is the 13th highest rated junior player in the world with an ELO rating of 2590.
