Chess Olympiad 2008 round 7 results: Philippines defeats Belgium

The RP men's team had so far scored their "easiest" win at the Dresden Olympiad by crushing the Belgian team 3.5 : 0.5. Only GM Buenaventura Villamayor agreed to halve the points with IM Richard Polaczek. The rest of the team delivered a victory. Wesley So needed just 20 moves to subdue IM Ekrem Cekro while John Paul Gomez needed just 23 moves to finished off IM Bruno Laurent. A nice, quick and easy result for the RP team as we will be facing the 20th seed the Netherlands in round 8 who absorbed a devastating loss to Vietnam in round 7.

The character of this Philippine team will definitely show on how they will fair against the Dutch. Hopefully, all of them will be fearless and go for the win in every board. It's now or never! I'm praying for a 4-0 win but a 2 1/2 - 1 1/2 result will be great :)

Hi Luar, The Vietnamese almost upset 2nd seed Ukraine in round 1 and now they beat the 20th seed, the Netherlands. The Philippines have to beat the Netherlands. Far eastern chess is making a noise now in the west!
