GM Evgeny Najer wins World Open for two straight years; Pinoy IM Angelo Young tied for 1st in U-2400

GM Najer of Russia and GM Hiraku Nakamura of US, both finished tie for first place at the end of the final round would normally face each other in an Armageddon blitz play-off to decide the overall Champion and of course for that little extra cash but according to reports at US chess federation website Nakamura has already left Philadelphia as he is due to Spain by 7th of July. And so automatically, with no one to oppose him for the play off, Najer will once again be crowned World Open Champion having won the title last year.

No Filipino participated in the Open section but Chicago based Pinoy, IM Angelo Young tied for first in the Under-2400 but actually landed in 4th place in total scoring.

Names of our US based Filipino chess players like Sevillano and Barcenilla where they have very strong chances of finishing among the top ten to twenty at least are not in the list of participants. Also, IM Barbosa who has already 17 US title thus far, might have already left the US or competing in some other tournaments?

Final Standings is HERE
