So is tied with 15 other players with 3 1/2 points, trailling the leaders by a full point, while Haridas is currently tied with 19 other players with 2 points with 8 more rounds to play.

FIDE Grand Prix Sochi resumes

Hostilities at the FIDE Grand Prix Sochi resumes today, 7 pm, Manila time. You can see all the LIVE games HERE. Three players shares the top spots after 5 rounds: Radjabov, Cheparinov and Grischuk. One important question that will be answer today after a day of rest is has Peter Svidler already recover from his back injury he suffer after playing a friendly football game? Interesting match up is between the two co-leaders of the tourney: Cheparinov and Grischuk. My prediction? A draw. Also the match up between Gelfand and Radjabov should be entertaining.

Wesley So drew his fourth round match

Wesley So took no risk and decided to halve the point with GM Leon Hoyos Manuel of Mexico. Meanwhile Harids Pascua still struggling against his much higher rated opponents by bowing to FM Pacher Milan (2361) of Slovakia. After four rounds, Wesley had 3 points while Haridas just managed to score but a point. So will next face GM Alejandro Ramirez (2531) in the fifth round while Pascua will be match up against Uludogan Lutfullah of host Turkey.

NCFP and its leadership under new criticism

Chess Heroes do not dig up and thrive on gossips, trivialities, baseless accusations etc. But nonetheless readers of this blog might find it worth "browsing" as every chess followers especially Pinoy chess fans that scattered around the globe, must be regularly updated on the true status of Philippine chess.

The NCFP is a rudderless sports boat being run by two or three officials.

Important policy decisions are arbitrarily made and rammed down the throats of chess players. Grandmasters and national players are banned without due process only to be allowed to play again depending on the temper and caprices of NCFP leaders.

GMs Eugene Torre and Joey Antonio opted to be out of the Philippine team for the first time in 19 Olympiads.

Between them, they hold practically all national chess titles since 1970.

This is their way of protesting the uncertain state of Philippine chess under the present NCFP leadership, whose legitimacy is still pending before a court of law because the reigning officials were allegedly put into office by only 36 out of more than 500 voting clubs nationwide!

WJCC8: So, half a point behind the leaders

Wesley So drew his second round match with Indian IM Sengupta before crushing Hungarian IM Boros Denes (2472) in the third round. Wesley now had garnered 2 1/2 points for a possible 3. On the leader boards with 3 wins are GM Baseen of Egypt (2561), GM Safarli Eltaj of Azerbaijan (2527), and IM Sanikidze Tornike of Georgia (2486). Meanwhile another Pinoy hopeful, Haridas Pascua lost his second match in a row to Russian Super GM and third seed Andreikin Dmitry (2604) before he finally get his first win of the tournament courtesy of Turkish Vural Ozge (1853). Wesley So will next face GM Leon Hoyos Manuel of Mexico (2543) in the 4th round while Haridas Pascua will be pitted against FM Pacher Milan of Slovakia.

A failed coup de etat for Magnus

World champion Vishy Anand made a huge statement: he is still the best chess player on the planet by humbling on what consider by many as his heir apparent, Magnus Carlsen of Norway, 3-1 at 13th GrenkeLeasing Rapid Final in Mainz, Germany. Magnus was completely outplayed in the first two games and was lucky enough to get a draw in the third game. The last game ended in a short draw, just 11 moves of the Queens Indian but it was more of an humble acceptance of the painful truth.

Breaking News: Wesley So win his first game

Wesley So hurdle passed his first round assignment against FM Djuraev Sokhi of Tajikistan. The PGN at the WJCC8 official website isn't available at the moment . On the other hand, it looks like NM Haridas Pascua was not that so lucky against his much tougher opponent, IM Melkumyan Hrant. So will next face 40th seed IM Sengupta Deep of India (2454) in the second round while Haridas will try to bounce back against still to be named opponent.

Torre surprised Antonio in Game 6 to even the series 3-3

Rarely heard of it? neither played against it? Then let's try it!

Eugene Torre, desperately trying to find a way to pull off one final victory against long time archival Joey Antonio to even the series, employed a rarely seen opening repertoire in both non master and top level chess, the London System. The London System is a complex of related chess openings that begin with 1.d4 followed by an early Bf4. The London System requires very little knowledge of opening theory and normally results in a very closed game. "1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Bf4 . . . 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 e6 3.Bf4 . . . 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.Bf4." Torre defeated Antonio in 42 moves of these surprise opening to even the score at 3-3 on two wins, two draws and two losses. Although a knockout game was initially agreed if the score ended in a tie, both Torre and Antonio later decided to share top honors and the prizes put up by the Quezon City government. Gold Medals were also awarded to both Torre and Antonio.

All's well that ends well.

A total of P 300,000 is at stake in the 2008 National Inter-Cities and Municipalities Chess Team Championship to be held from October 6 - 12, 2008 hosted by Bacolod City headed by Mayor Evelio "Bing" Leonardia.

Teams shall be composed of a minimum of 4 & maximum of 5 and may field only one (1) titled player. This tournament shall be nine rounds swiss system using the Match Point scoring system.

Evgeny Alekseev wins the 41st Biel International Chess Festival

This year's Biel winner: GM Evegeny Alekseev

Just when everybody thought that GM Leinier Dominguez would runaway with the title having a full point lead to protect with only one round left to play, here comes GM Evgeny Alekseev making a huge rally in the final rounds of the tournament by beating GM Yannick Pelletier in the the 10th round and ertswhile leader, GM Dominguez in the tiebreak match. Actually the Cuban GM, one of the best chess player Cuba has ever produced since Jose Raul Capablanca needed only a draw to secure the title. But in a sudden turn of event he lost his final match against Bacrot and that allows for both players to play a deciding match. In the tiebreak two 15-minute rapid games were drawn, so two blitz games at 5 minutes plus two seconds increment were played. The first was a draw. In the second, Alekseev was victorious, with 18 seconds left on his clock.
